Kaufmann & Moore '22 : Ramboy 40 : double cd (live): pieces by Kaufmann, Moore and Andrew Hill

Achim Kaufmann and Michael Moore began playing together 25 years ago when both lived in Amsterdam (Michael still does). Some of their early collaborations took place in the framework of Kaufmann’s projects, such as gueuledeloup quartet and trio kamosc.

In 2013, Kaufmann and Moore released a triple cd edition of duet recordings which covered the spectrum from completely improvised pieces to original compositions to interpretations of Herbie Nichols’ pieces.

Their duo music is informed by a mutual love of innumerable diverse forms of musical expression and is characterized by attunement to sound and a highly intuitive way of playing together that they have developed over the years. Seemingly innocuous details can trigger sudden shifts in direction; harmonic changes or highly contrasting musical gestures are sometimes merely implied yet understood instinctively and jointly developed further or juxtaposed in unforeseen ways.

In 2024, Kaufmann and Moore released a double cd with live material that focuses on the work of the composer/pianist Andrew Hill -- in addition to their own pieces and instant compositions.

"These sessions seem to be a signal moment for Kaufmann and Moore, one for examining every little aspect of how they interact.
The music is a monument to sustained, unflinching (and deeply satisfying) introspection. Indeed, if you let yourself explore these discs – straight through, on permanent shuffle, or in stages (I tried a few variations) – you’re given a microscopic tour of duo art. These Ramboys are rarely fevered, yet they never stand still. They contain some extraordinary music-making."
